Romano Carnival – Future of an Ancient Festivity

One of the most colourful and enjoyable traditions of the capital has been successfully revived. For four years now the Roman Carnival has returned to the streets and squares of the city, from centre to suburbs, with productions of commedia dell’arte, Baroque-style fireworks, events in costume, parades and games for children. Harlequin, Columbine, Pantalone and Pulcinella are just some of the characters embodying the joyful spirit of this 18th-century festivity, accompanied by horses, which have always been a part of carnival in the past. The key event is in fact an equestrian display in tribute to the race of Berber horses that used to take place along Via del Corso and was a source of inspiration for artists, poets and writers and an attraction for aristocrats travelling from all over Europe. Piazza del Popolo will be the main stage for parades, displays by famous Italian and international riders and by cavalry officers, pony rides and an introduction to the world of the ‘butteri’ cowboys, all organised by Marco Lepre on behalf of the Accademia del Teatro Equestre.
The Roman Carnival is sponsored by Roma Capitale and overseen by artistic director Leonardo Petrillo. It promises once again to offer a rare chance to enjoy a traditional masked festivity and re-live the gaiety of a very ancient rite.
